The Murfreesboro City Council recently approved a Prepared And Ready – Tennessee New Event Response program with the American Red Cross Heart of Tennessee Chapter.

This Red Cross program enlists the support of area business and organizations in order to meet the need for a well trained and available volunteer workforce and allows them to play a greater role in disaster relief operations.

Murfreesboro has approved some of its non-emergency employees to its own recovery efforts from storm or other disaster related events to serve three days to two weeks as a local Red Cross volunteer. They would be provided additional training on Red Cross emergency job roles.

“These employees have expertise and knowledge about the city and can assist our residents and the Red Cross.  These employees are also eager to help and this program can provide that opportunity,” City Manager Rob Lyons said.

During this time, he said, the employee would continue to be paid their regular compensation by the city.

“The Red Cross is a vital component in the recovery process in the event of a disaster and the city of Murfreesboro looks forward to this collaborative effort,” Lyons said.
