Officials with the Finance, Tax and Records Department are reminding residents that they have until Monday, Dec. 31, to pay property taxes.

Director Melissa Wright said she wants to remind those who received the more than 40,000 tax notices that starting Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, a 1.5 percent per month penalty will be applied until the taxes are paid.

If not paid, the bill could be turned over to Rutherford County Chancery Court and the property sold.

Payments may be made by with cash, check or money order. The city does not accept credit or debit cards, bank counter checks or two-party checks.

Payments made by mail should be made payable to the city of Murfreesboro and mailed to P.O. Box 1139, Murfreesboro, Tenn., 37133-1139.

Payments made in person are to be made at the Finance Department, located on the first floor of City Hall at 111 West Vine St., Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Wright said each tax notice has a five-digit receipt number located in the top left. This number should be written on all checks or money order, and most importantly, "don’t forget to sign your check.”
