Murfreesboro Post business profile: Karyn Beaty

Name: Karyn Beaty

Title: Executive Officer

Company name: Rutherford County Home Builders Association

Web site: www.RCHBA.com

Address: 730-A Middle Tennessee Blvd., Suite 5 (mailing: PO Box 331479, Murfreesboro 37133)

Time in current position: Nine years

What does your company produce? The RCHBA is a nonprofit service organization serving the residential construction industry.

What is your basic business philosophy? Our mission statement: The RCHBA is a non-profit organization of building industry professionals who work together to promote high standards, education and housing opportunities in our community.

Give us a sales pitch in 25 words or less: We afford members the opportunity to interact with industry and government leaders and provide tools for professional growth to help them excel in business.

What is your proudest business achievement? Creation, last year, of our charitable foundation, Home Builders Care of Rutherford County, and the good work we have been able to accomplish through it, such as providing educational scholarships, our Oakland High School partnership -- the Masonry Trades program there -- and our involvement with the U.S. Marine Corps as the local sponsor for Toys for Tots.

What led you to Murfreesboro? After consideration of several areas in the U.S., I chose to move here for many reasons: the geographical location, friendly people, quality of life, low cost of living, employment opportunities, temperate climate, local university — to name just a few.

What is your educational background? I attended MTSU as a non-traditional student to complete my bachelor’s degree in advertising. I earned minors in English, marketing and graphic design.

Where are you originally from? Although I was born in Wisconsin, our family moved to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1957 (two years before Alaska gained statehood). After 25 years of nine-month winters, I moved to the Murfreesboro area, where I’ve lived for nearly 25 years. When asked how I landed in Murfreesboro, my usual reply is, “I just headed south until I thawed out.” Our family has lived in the Readyville community for the past 19 years.

What do you do for fun? I enjoy a little gardening, travel, reading, and pets of all shapes, sizes and species. In my more adventurous youth, I tried skydiving, was an avid backpacker, and raised, showed and trained AKC Collies and American Saddlebred horses.

Tell us about your family: Ken (a Pickett County native) and I married in 1986. We have two daughters Katy and Kristin who both graduated from college this year from MTSU and Draughons Junior College, respectively; and one granddaughter, 5-year-old Alecia.

Who was your mentor? She may not realize how much she’s guided me and how very much I value her opinion, but the single most important person who has mentored me for the last nine years is my dear friend Candy Roberts, executive director of the Middle Tennessee Association of Realtors.

What is the most important thing going on now at your operation? Finding ways to help our members weather the housing crisis is our focus; and working within our communities to help re-instill confidence in the local housing market.
