Euhommie Bond
Murfreesboro Police are mourning former Officer Euhommie Bond, 41, of Jackson who was killed early Sunday outside a bar he owned.

The off-duty Bond was helping an unruly customer to leave the bar when the customer shot him, said Murfreesboro Police Capt. Carl Watkins, a close friend.

Bond worked for Murfreesboro Police from 1996-2001. He was a former police chief at Bradford, Tenn., and a Haywood County sheriff’s deputy at the time of his murder.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Jackson. The funeral will be noon at the church. He is survived by his wife, Angela, and three children, ages 21, 10, and 2. He was a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Murfreesboro Detective Ava Radley met Bond about 10 years ago when she joined the department.

“He was a character, being silly,” Radley said. “I never saw him angry.”

She laughed when she recalled how the physically fit bond would radio dispatchers when he was in foot pursuit of a suspect.

“Give me three seconds, headquarters, the suspect will be in custody,” Radley said, quoting Bond.

Bond liked to play practical jokes on Radley. In fact, she believed he made a prank phone call to her last week. They played phone tag Friday but didn’t get to talk to each other.

“Euhommie was a good friend and he definitely will be missed,” Radley said. “He left a long-lasting impression on everyone he met and befriended.”

Vice Detective Merrill Beene said he met Bond when he joined the police department. He, Bond and Detective Hubert Jones were roommates several years. They often worked out together at a gym. When working out, he often helped other people trying to get in shape.

“He made everybody feel tall around him,” Beene said. “He brought out the best in everybody.”

He was named “the finest man in America” in one of Ricki Lake’s television shows, the detective said, adding, Bond loved the camera and modeled.

Bond left Murfreesboro Police to take a job at Memphis Police Department. The U.S. Army Reserve as a captain and commander activated him to serve in Germany.

“One of his big achievements was being a captain in the army, being commander over a unit,” Beene recalled. “He was proud of that.”

He served as Bradford’s police chief when a tornado damaged the town a few years ago.

Although working as a sheriff’s deputy, Bond bought Spanky’s sports bar about two years ago in Jackson. Beene believes the bar gave him an escape from law enforcement. Bond loved to wait on people and talk to people at the bar.

Bond considered Murfreesboro home. He always kept in touch with the police officers and attended funeral of officers who died.

He applied again to become a Murfreesboro Police officer and visited with Jones and Beene about two weeks ago when taking a test for the department.

“We definitely lost a true friend,” Beene said. “You don’t meet anybody like him who meets the standards. There was nothing fake about him.”
