One driver and a passenger were flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center after a Friday evening crash shut down South Church Street during rush hour.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. near the intersection of South Church Street and Butler Drive in Murfreesboro.

"After a preliminary investigation, Murfreesboro Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team investigators believe a black Toyota Corolla operated by Tammy Lee Cone, 48, of Amanda Way in Murfreesboro, was traveling south on South Church Street just north of Butler Drive," said Sgt. Kyle Evans, public information officer for the Police Department.

"Cone attempted to turn left across the northbound lanes and enter the Kangaroo Market at 2610 S. Church St.," he said. "The vehicle was struck on the passenger side by Rilee S. Hughes, 20, of East Chestnut Street in Murfreesboro, in a red Dodge Neon, which was traveling north on South Church Street."

Both Cone and Hughes's passenger Alyshan Schoch, 19, of Amanda Way, were flown by LifeFlight for treatment. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

The FACT team is investigating the details of the crash.

Friday, Oct. 19

Police are still on the scene investigating a serious injury crash that occurred Friday just before 5 p.m. on South Church Street near the intersection of Butler Drive in Murfreesboro.

Two LifeFlight helicopters were requested at the scene and up to three people were reportedly injured in the crash.

As of 7:30 p.m., traffic was still being diverted in the area and both directions of South Church Street remained at a near standstill for more than a mile due to the ongoing investigation being conducted by the Fatal Accident Crash Team.

Officials with the FACT team said Murfreesboro drivers should avoid South Church Street until at least 10 p.m., noting the traffic is still backed up throughout the area and will likely remain that way for quite some time.

Additional information about the identities or the extent of the injuries of those involved has not yet been released to the public.
