Firefighters and other people who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks will be remembered by Murfreesboro Fire Department firefighters Friday morning.

Murfreesboro firefighters will host a bell ceremony to remember especially the New York City firefighters, said Assistant Chief Allen Swader. The ceremony will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the main headquarters on Vine Street. It should last about 15 minutes.

Fire departments symbolize a firefighter’s death by striking the bell five times, pausing, striking the bell five more times, pausing and striking the bell five more times.

“The five, five, five (strikes on the bell) symbolizes when a firefighter loses his life in the duty of duty and his return to heaven,” Swader said.

Citizens are invited to attend.
