MTSU offers variety of youth summer camps

MTSU Campus Recreation Center is offering youth camps throughout the summer with something for everybody from the Youth Sports Camp to Creative Photography Camp.

The Youth Sports Camp is an opportunity for children to learn a variety of sport, leisure, and fitness activities that provide crucial life skills including: good sportsmanship, the value of regular exercise, and how to work together as a team. It has 12 week-long sessions beginning May 28 and finishing Aug. 6. The cost is only $150 per week including lunch and will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

From June 6-10, the MTSU Recreation Center is holding the Creative Writing Camp. Campers will tell stories, do interactive classroom activities, and take campus and community excursions to inspire their artistic minds. This is for any children, ages 10-14, with a passion for writing. Cost for the camp is $60 with all writing material provided and will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Adventure Camp is designed for children to develop and practice skills to use while exploring the outdoors.  Campers will rock climb, canoe, hike, boat, swim, white water kayak, and white water raft. There is an overnight camping trip to the Pigeon River included. Campers ages 14-17 can participate for only $180. The camp is from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and runs from June 27 to July 1.

Leadership Camp will be introducing campers to necessary skills for college and life after high school. Campers will strengthen their skills through classroom activities, sports and recreation games, and community service. This is designed to instill leadership qualities into campers ages 15- 17. It lasts from 8a.m. – 4p.m. and runs from July 6-8. The cost is $50 and includes any supplies necessary for the camp.

To strengthen your camper’s photography skills or to learn some new skills, join the Photography Intro Camp from July 25–29. Campers will learn the ins and outs of photography and beginnings skills.  Through classroom activities, practice, viewing of local exhibits, visiting inspiring photographic areas, and a class exhibit of the individual’s pictures, campers will become stronger and more intelligent photographers. It lasts from 8 a.m. – 4p.m. and the cost is $75. This is designed for campers ages 13 – 16.

The Go Swim Camp focuses on competitive skill building for ages 10-17. It includes stroke techniques and swim drills combined with dry land conditioning. This camp is only $12 and is offered in five separate week long sessions from June 13-July 25 and lasts from 3:30-5 p.m.

The Go Diving Fundamentals Camp is sponsored by American Red Cross and can lead to advanced diving in Middle or High School competition. It is for beginner divers between ages 8-16. The cost is $30 and last from 2-3 p.m. There are two week long session offered from  June 6– July 18.

Athletic Skills Camp offers campers the opportunity to be introduced to a variety of sports including soccer, martial arts, rock climbing, rugby, and many more. The camp will expand the campers’ knowledge of physical activity through sports and also its importance in a healthy lifestyle. The camp is on June 13 – 17 from 8 a.m. - 4p.m. and costs $100 for campers ages 9-12.
