MTSU may have a new building in its future.

The State Building Commission approved the initial design phase for a new College of Education and Behavioral Science, Rep. Joe Carr (R-Lascassas) announced today.

“I’m very pleased to see that the State Building Commission has approved several projects for MTSU,” said Rep. Carr. “This shows that although the budget will be tight, we are still making sure MTSU is on the radar, and receiving commitments.”

The funds for the nearly $30-million College of Education and Behavioral Science building has already been allocated, although the project is not likely to begin in the next few years. Almost $18 million has been allocated for the project with an additional $12,555,000 to be funded by bonds.

The State Building Commission was shown computer models of what the building will look like and approved the first design phase of the building. The facility will use the latest in green technology to utilize space efficiently, and create a stable and comfortable work environment for students and staff.

The SBC also approved repairs to the sewer and steam system including manhole replacement, and a new fire alarm system for the James Union Building at its monthly meeting Thursday morning.

The JUB Fire Alarm system was slated for an upgrade in another project but the university asked to reallocate that money for the replacement of a fire alarm system in the Stark Agricultural Building instead.

The JUB fire alarm system will cost $575,000, most of which will be paid for with government outlay bonds. The sewer upgrades will cost from $989,000 to $1,217,808, to be paid for with government outlay bonds and a combination of university and state funds.

The State Building Commission was created by the Legislature in 1955 to oversee construction of all State public buildings. The commission's responsibility has been expanded to include authority over most acquisition, disposal, improvement or demolition of real property owned by the State with the exclusion of roads, highways, and bridges. In addition, its authority extends to the leasing of real property as well as disposal by lease of State property.
