NASHVILLE – The Middle Tennessee women’s tennis team put a stamp on its fall tournament season with three singles wins Sunday afternoon during final day action of the June Stewart Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
A pair of Blue Raiders was slated to meet in the Ashley Crosby championship. However, to prevent the occurrence, matches were shifted so that contests could be played among different schools. The rearrangement did not affect Middle Tennessee, however, as both of its players in the flight were victorious.
Senior Taylor Coffey battled through a tough meeting with Miami (Ohio)’s Jessica Parr before prevailing 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Classmate Alex Dachos also had to go three sets in her contest but rallied to claim a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win against UNC Asheville’s Jenna Dodge.
The Blue Raiders faced a similar situation in the Lise Gregory bracket with two MT players scheduled for the title match. Again, contests were moved to prevent it from happening.
After the shift, junior Lexi Brand came out on top in her match, coming from behind for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 triumph against Katherine Castro of Miami (Ohio).
Junior Yuiri Nomoto and sophomore Flavia Nagayama both played in flight championships of the Brad Roby and Jason Valentine brackets, respectively, but they lost their decisions with Nagayama playing three sets.
Middle Tennessee’s strong fall campaign ended Sunday. The Blue Raiders will return to on-court action in January for the beginning of the dual-match season.
