MTSU Crime Stoppers is offering a reward up to $300 for information about bicycle thefts on campus.
Police have seen an increase in bicycle thefts, reported Detective Lt. Matt Foster.
“We suspect that most of the thefts are being committed by juveniles who have no affiliation with MTSU but do live near campus,” Foster said. “We are basing this on witness statements and information gathered during our course of investigating these thefts. What we do not know at this point is who exactly is taking these bicycles and where they are going.”
MTSU Crime Stoppers Board Member Travis Smith said the board decided to offer the reward for information leading to the arrest of suspects stealing the bicycles on campus.
“We not only want to help the campus police to solve these thefts but to make the public more aware of these thefts because so many students have bicycles on campus,” Smith said.
MTSU Police recommended using a strong lock to secure bicycles to racks.
“Many, if not most of the cases, involve bikes that were secured to bike racks with a thin chain, a thin cable or an inexpensive lock,” Foster said. “We also recommend that you register your bicycle with the campus police department. Doing so helps us to find out if the bike is stole if there is ever a question about it and to get it back to its rightful owner if it is stolen.”
Bicyclists may call MTSU Police at 898-2424 to register.
People who have information about the bicycle thieves are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 893-STOP between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
All callers remain anonymous.
