MTSU’s Peck Hall was evacuated Wednesday morning when a custodian found a suspicious box with a white powder, but the box contained paper towels, an assistant fire chief said.

The event occurred when classes resumed after fall break and after classes were canceled Thursday and Friday when administrators and faculty received a threatening email.

MTSU Police, Murfreesboro Fire Department, the Emergency Management Agency and the Emergency Medical Services’ Special Operations Response Team responded to the call, said Assistant Fire Chief Gary Farley.

“We treated it as if it was the real thing,” Farley said.

Firefighters dressed in hazardous materials suits entered the building, located the box and determined in 10 to 15 minutes the box was not a hazard, the chief said.

MTSU used their emergency text-messaging system to alert the campus about the incident and after it was over.

“We were trying to keep university students and faculty informed and not to be frightened,” Farley said. “We appreciate the help from everybody.”
