Middle Tennessee Medical Center has placed an 84-year-old marker from the original hospital in the healing garden of the new MTMC to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the hospital’s move to its current Medical Center Parkway location. The marker is a pediment which crowned the original entrance of Rutherford Hospital, later known as Building A of the old MTMC facility on Highland Avenue. It reads “For the Welfare of Mankind,” a message that refers to the hospital’s mission to provide safe, quality health care to the community, especially the poor and vulnerable. It was installed in its new location at the new MTMC on Oct. 3 to recognize the hospital’s heritage of healing that dates back to 1927. During the ceremony, the pediment was blessed with a sprinkling of water from the Jordan River. MTMC employees also attached special prayers and messages to balloons, which were then released into the air. “As we deconstruct the old MTMC, we’ve been able to salvage this one part and preserve that piece of our history,” said Gordon B. Ferguson, president and CEO of MTMC. “The pediment is a constant reminder of MTMC’s commitment to our calling and mission.” The pediment can be viewed in MTMC’s healing garden. The garden is designed to be a place of relaxation and meditation for patients, families and MTMC staff. |
