Middle Tennessee Medical Center and Turner Universal celebrated a significant milestone in the construction of the new hospital Sept. 29 with the placing of the tallest piece of steel.
Days before the lunch ceremony, MTMC employees and friends had the chance to sign and write messages on the piece of steel that is now resting on the seventh floor of the facility.
Construction on the 560,000-square-foot replacement facility began in April. The steel framing of the massive building is expected to be complete by the end of December. The hospital is set for a November 2010 occupancy date.
The new hospital is 128 feet, eight inches tall from its highest point.
MTMC president and chief executive officer Gordon Ferguson recognized the work of the construction crew, MTMC staff, the MTMC Foundation and the Christy-Houston Foundation, which has contributed greatly to the new hospital during the ceremony.
Workers for Turner Universal, the construction company, have more logged more than 140,000 hours on the site.
