Middle Tennessee football coach Rick Stockstill announced his sixth recruiting class as head coach of the Blue Raiders Wednesday.

The class includes players from six different states, the majority coming out of Georgia. Some of the players include transfers from Florida State and LSU, a junior college player from Georgia Military and a former Tennessee commit that chose not to report to the Volunteers last season.

“I think it’s a really, really good class. I’m excited about it,” Stockstill said. “I thought we filled out needs.”

Stockstill started by addressing the quarterback signings, which included Pensacola, Fla., native Shaun White and Timmy Byerly from Alpharetta, Ga. White was at one point committed to Vanderbilt.

The team signed one running back, LSU transfer Drayton Allen-Calhoun, who is currently on Middle Tennessee’s campus. The player has put in a hardship waiver with the NCAA and hopes to be eligible this season.

Middle signed four offensive linemen. Junior college player Micah James and early high school graduate Jason Rexroad are already on campus. Two wide receivers were announced Wednesday, but Stockstill said the team would like to add one more.

“Really, really, really excited about what we signed at the corner position,” Stockstill said. “I think they’re all athletic, they can run. Speed is where it all starts on defense.”

One player Stockstill mentioned was Florida State transfer Jajuan Harley, who will not be eligible this season due to transfer rules. Marcques Dixon, who will enter college a year late after deciding not to report to Tennessee last season, is also part of this group.

“(Dixon) looks in great shape, looks like he’s been working out, looks like he’s been taking care of his body,” Stockstill said.

Two safeties were announced, both players Stockstill feels fit very well into the system at Middle with their toughness and speed. He also mentioned Ykeem Wells, the class’ one linebacker recruit.

Finally, he announced three defensive ends and two defensive tackles. Stockstill says he would like to add one more of each to finish out the class.

“I love their attitude. They’re all excited about being here,” Stockstill said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to coach them.”

“I believe everything in this program is competition. How fast they learn, how well they do, they’ll have an opportunity. We’re going to play the best player at every position and we’ll give those guys an opportunity to come in here and compete.”

Stockstill praised everyone involved in the recruiting process from top to bottom before beginning the press conference for the work they did. He also talked about the excitement recruiting players brings and his love for “competing” for the players Middle signs.

“We’ve got a great product here at Middle Tennessee,” Stockstill said. “They can accomplish everything they want in a college career at Middle Tennessee. We’re going to graduate our players, we’re going to go to bowl games, we’re going to be on T.V., you’re going to get coached by great coaches. You’re going to live in a great city, a great community.

“This football program is on the verge of taking off. We don’t have to take a backseat to anybody.”

The football staff at Middle will take the next two days off after making the late push before returning to work and preparing for practice to start March 16.

“Now the signees will be wearing us out, calling us all the time,” Stockstill joked. “We might take tonight off and let them know what it feels like to call and not answer the phone.
