I had a great e-mail response to my article of Favorite Finds.
Terri Sterling noted that the $5 reading glasses from Dollar General don't break as frequently as the $1 ones and touted the merits of Glad Press 'n Seal. I totally agree about the Press 'n Seal. You can make an "envelope" for anything out of this stuff, and not even necessarily food. She also recommends filling empty water bottles with tap water to save $$$. Doing that also saves the environment. Very green.
Ann Kathryn Scott recommended the ammonia-free window cleaner from Fred's, saying
it's particularly effective in making granite counter tops shine. She also noted that packaged disposable wipes get stains out of clothing quite well when applied immediately.
Another reader, Amy Cook, told me of a new book from Julie Morganstern: “When Organizing isn't Enough ... Shed Your Stuff, Change Your Life.” I checked my trusty Linebaugh Library online catalog, found it there and placed a hold on it this morning.
My organized sister Carroll uses Julie as her mentor, and just last week I found a DVD, “Organizing from the Inside Out,” at Linebaugh. I also found a DVD on “The Art of Knitting,” which looks like a great instructional tool for all levels. I hope I can remember where I put that Julie Morganstern DVD when I'm ready to get to work.
Reader Leslie Mertz swears by DeSolvIt cleaner (which she can only find at Holden Hardware on the Square). She says it takes spots out of everything, including candle wax on tablecloths. Just yesterday I threw away a cloth napkin with candle wax on it, so I'll be heading to Holden's to buy that.
I discovered one more great find last week – Cover Girl Line Exact liquid eyeliner. I've been in the market for good non-smearing eyeliner for a very long time, and girls, if they make it better than this, I haven't found it. It comes in a short, very easy to apply applicator and does just what you want it to do. Available for about $7 in most grocery and/or drug stores.
And speaking of the Square, I went with friends one frosty day this week to Marinas for lunch and, boy was it great! Try the eggplant salad. The menu outside The Maple Street Grill was also enticing so we plan to try that on our next luncheon venture. The chicken salad at All Souped Up has been calling my name recently, too.
And speaking of cold weather...
Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that the robins in the yard act like they think it's spring? For the first time ever I've seen them picking the red berries off of my prized winterberry shrub. My husband Tommy thinks maybe the berries have "ripened up" earlier this year, but they've never eaten them before. Beats me.
The hyacinths act like they think it's spring, too, because their little globe-like domes are beginning to pop up out of the ground.
I've noticed that the chickweed or nut grass or some kind of weed is rearing its ugly little head all around – and I mean all around – our yard, too. I noticed the same weed growing profusely along the paths of the Greenway when my daughter Anne and I walked there after Christmas. If only we could train the deer to eat that.
It's only January and we haven't even reached the time when the groundhog looks for his shadow, yet, but I've had enough of these frigid days we've had recently. Spring can't come soon enough for me!
Bundle up – 'til next week!
