The Murfreesboro Police Department comes hat in hand to the city council meeting Thursday night, asking for a new police car.

MPD wants to replace a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria, which was totaled in a Jan. 14 crash involving an officer. Officer Matthew Garrett was driving his patrol car on Northwest Broad Street when the Jeep turned into his path and the patrol car T-boned the jeep.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol ruled the crash was not the officer's fault and MPD expects the other driver's insurance to reimburase the cost of replacing the patrol car.

To buy a 2010 Crown Vic with sirens and lights, the police department is requesting more than $22,500. The money will come from the city’s Risk Management Fund, wich is used as a self-insurance fund.

just curious - since there are always multiple officers on any call whether or not it's a traffice violation or more - why not put two officers in the same car and cut the need for cars by half?

I need a new car myself, but I can't afford one!

They need the car so that the MPD can respond faster to old blue hair ladies jaywalking or to shake down small children for their candy !

If the jeep owners insurance is paying for the car then why not wait until then? Or take one from the many officers that drive them home. I have three that live near me. I don't know when they work because their patrol cars are always in front of their houses.

BoltAction, they probably are working third shift while you are tucked tightly in your warm bed counting sheep......just saying...
