Each year, the Murfreesboro Police and Fire Departments celebrate National Emergency Telecommunications Week with a ceremony held at the Murfreesboro Police Department.

The national tradition was started in 1981 to put a special focus on public safety telecommunications professionals for their contributions to the safety and security of communities around the world.

On Tuesday Murfreesboro Mayor Tommy Bragg, along with Chief of Police Glenn Chrisman and Fire Chief Cumbey Gaines, presented the Emergency 9-1-1 personnel with a City Proclamation recognizing National Telecommunications Week.

Also recognized at the event was the 2010 Dispatcher of the Year, Amber Smith.

The Dispatcher of the Year Program was established to recognize outstanding performance by Murfreesboro Police/Fire Communications dispatchers.

Smith will be recognized at the annual Telecommunicator of the Year awards breakfast hosted by the Rutherford County Emergency Communications District on Friday.
