The Murfreesboro Police Department’s Communication Center honored local public safety Telecommunicators – the “first” first responders – this week during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

National Emergency Telecommunications Week was started in 1981 to put a special focus on public safety telecommunications professionals for their contributions to the safety and security of communities around the world. The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International convinced Congress of the need for a formal proclamation in 1991; it became permanent in 1994.

To honor the MPD’s Telecommunicators, the department held a ceremony Tuesday in the Communications Center located on the second floor of the Main Building of the Police Department.

The Dispatcher of the year Lindsay Callahan was honored at the ceremony as well.

MPD’s Communications Department is responsible for answering all calls for service placed within the city limits. Last year that counted for 19,300 calls, averaging 3,100 911-calls per month.

While answering the phone may sound easy, dispatchers have to listen to the phone, the police radio and their Nextels – all at the same time – while relaying that information to officers on the street.
