Motorcyclist cited for felonies, 163 mph speed

One suspected drunk motorcyclist driving 163 mph with a passenger was stopped and charged with felonies after a “Bike Night” saturation, a state trooper supervisor said.

State Trooper Michael Marvin charged Scott Dwight Jones Jr., 27, of 4693 Seminary Drive in Smyrna with DUI, felony evading arrest and felony reckless endangerment of his passenger, said Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Rick Smith.

Smith cited him for speeding at 163 mph in a 70 mph zone and failing to have insurance.

“We’re very concerned about the mixture of (speed and) alcohol,” Smith said. “We probably prevented a really bad accident.”

Jones’ arrest was part of a saturation of seven state troopers during “Bike Night.”

About 90 percent of the sports motorcycle operates are law abiding but the 10 percent earn a public outcry about their speeds, he said.

Besides Jones’ arrest, troopers wrote 109 citations with 43 speeding citations and 27 or more than half without insurance.

“That should be of growing concern,” Smith said. “Our biggest nightmare is chasing a bike and a bike slam into a third party.”

A THP helicopter boosted troopers on the ground.

Trooper Justin Boyd stopped a motorcyclist driving 105 mph. The motorcyclist told Boyd he started not to stop. Boyd told him a helicopter was monitoring the motorcyclists just a moment before the pilot shone a light to check on him.

Besides the traffic violations, troopers inspected three commercial trucks and changed one flat tire for a woman.

“At a time when most law enforcement agencies are micromanaging, the THP encourages independent thinking that makes our operation so successful,” Smith said.

They just buried a friend of mine yesterday for loosing his life on a motorcycle and he was probably careful. Defensive driving is the only way to ride a bike.

What about neighbors who get out on their dirt bikes between 10:00p.m. and 12:00 p.m. and go flying up and down the street, with no lights on, popping wheelies. They have a new baby and a girl about 5 years old. The lady just recently had a bike wreck and has broken bones in her leg but she says she will get right back on the dirt bike after she heals. This is insane.

That kid was outright stupid.

I would like to know.. "109 citations"? Where they all in murfreesboro? All on bikes? I think if you are to report the news you should report it correctly. How many cars where pulled over because they wanted to know if they had "proof of insurance"..it seems like people on bikes last night were targeted. It would be nice to have those extra state troopers in our community every night focusing on the bigger picture, like REAL Crime. I don't know why we always need to focus on the negative instead of the positive. That "bike night" raised money for the Disaster Relief Fund for our recent tornado victims, even Channel 5 News was there to back them up...now thats a positve!

Raising money for a cause is one thing, violation of the law or endangering other people and their lives that is another.

HEY GUYS LET'S TRY AND REMEMBER THAT RULES ARE BROKEN EVERYDAY. I JUST THINK IT'S FUNNY THAT THE POLICE USE SO MUCH MONEY ON THIS DAY TO GIVE OUT SO MANY TICKETS WHEN THEY SHOULD BE ON PEOPLE EVERYDAY...JUST A THOUGHT... I DON'T THINK PEOPLE SHOULD DRINK AND DRIVE OR DRINK AND RIDE,,,, BUT JUST THINK HOW MANY COP CARS SIT OUT IN FRONT OF STAMPEDE.... I GUESS THIS PLACE FEELS THE SAME WAY NOW...

What they need to do Is stop these events at Coconut Bay! Drinking & driving is bad enough,But to be on a Bike drunk? Look at how many Tragedys happen every year from Bike Night. Atleast Coconut Bay could save lives by NOT SERVING DRINKS during these events?????

Guess that's why they ask "your opinion"? Raising money is a great thing, and i thank them for that...but putting so much effort into catching a couple of guys speeding on bikes..like that has never happened?? That money could have been used for much more!!wow!! and "delta" i have a great life, thank you..it does seem like yours is a little sad tho ...not even a opinion on the story??

OH WELL WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER PLACES THAT HOST BIKE NIGHT'S IS THAT OK??? WHAT ABOUT THE BARS AND RESTAURANTS AND DANCE CLUBS IN TOWN THAT SPONSOR ALL KINDS OF EVENTS ...THE POINT IS NO MATTER WHAT U SHOULDN'T DRINK AND DRIVE...EVEN FROM A LOCAL PLACE IN A CAR.

163 mph, drunk, with a passenger is absolutely the most moronic thing I've ever heard. While I disagree with the police targeting these guys just because they ride bikes, I'm glad a cop was around to safely stop this one.

Why do other riders tolerate this kind of behavior? Seems they wouldn't want people like this moron out there giving the rest of them a bad name.

By: you88 on 4/17/09
I AGREE WITH U attagirl WHO EVEN WANTS TO RIDE 163 MPH...... THAT IS CRAZY. I WISH THE COPS WOULD STOP ALL CARS AND BIKES FOR THAT . AND THIS OTHER CHIC SAYING SOMETHING DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT???? ANSWER THAT ....

I have the greatest respect for most bikers. Any time there is a need for assistance you will find a bunch of bikers there to do whatever is needed. Unfortunately, like any group, whether it's bikers, policemen, firemen, or teachers, you will have an idiot who will bring negative attention down on them. We are adults. We know the laws! Let's not blame all bikers, the police, or the bars. Put the blame where it belongs! It belongs to this fool who chose to drink too much, drive to fast, and, Thank God, got caught before he killed someone. Great job to the cop that caught him. And, Thank You to all the bikers for their great effort toward the DRF!!

diddlede- Wonder if this fool woman has thought about the fact that the next time she wrecks she may not live through it? What are her actions saying to her 5 year old? You are right, it's insane. Most teenagers act more responsible than this woman does.

Boo,the young guy in our neighborhood was racing up and down the street last night. I had about had enough. When he started back up the street flying I went out, stood in the middle of the road with my arms out and stopped him. I gave him the third degree regarding our neighborhood being a quiet neighborhood. I was nice compared to what I wanted to actually tell him. He told me he had always lived in the country and this was his first time to live in the city. Duh! I even went so far as to remind him he was a parent of 2 lovely girls and that he was playing with fire riding full speed down our street and that he was going to kill himself or someone else. He said he would not bother me anymore and he put his bike away for the night. Hope this is permanent but will not hold my breath.

Of course this was all done for our safety...

More like for all the revenue $$$...

They could care less about your safety, all they want is your money, this is especially true for the State Gestapo uh I mean Troopers.

Let see, we know in advance that there will be a large gathering of drunk people leaving a bar......hmmmmmm seems like a prime place to POLICE the area.....
Let say we have a gathering like Bonaroo, no chance anyone would be brings drugs in through the gate.... no reason to search people on entry....

They should put extra patrols on every night and arrest people who are driving drunk. It only makes it easier, when you know where to find them.

Diddlede, call the police to report the "crazy" on the 4 wheeler at night on the streets. Don't hurt yourself by standing in the street or let them know you reported it. The police just have to cruise the street a few times to stop it. They really do want to help but we have to tell them. They can't be everywhere. Bikers are also stopped because people call in to report bad behavior. I have the police dispatch number 893-1311 in my cell and report a lot. Keeps the government from having to have more police cars on the streets and my taxes down. If the public reports the time and place and what's happening, it keeps them doing what they are suppose to do, keep us safe.

By: Boo on 4/18/09
diddlede- I understand why you did what you did. They had pushed you to your limit! I do agree with ME. You could have been injured if this idiot had not stopped. I'm glad it came out o-k and you were not hurt, and maybe your getting in his face will put a stop to it, but please don't do it again. I wouldn't want you to be injured by these fools!

I think I saw this guy on the four wheeler with his 5 year old daughter on the front rack speeding down compton road in the wrong direction in broad daylight. No-kidding. I like to ride, but safety first. Especially for your children.

I agree with me, Boo, imbatman etc. Four wheelers are dangerous. I have a nephew that was paralized two weeks ago on one from the hip down. He said that he could handle it!!!! Sounds like he handled it alright!!! I have also lost a friend to a wreck on a four wheeler. He laid in a vegetable state untill he was taken off of life support he was right here in the Boro at the NHC nursing home. A beautiful person with a beautiful family now Dad, husband is gone and his children are without a father. I am a Harley rider and I respect the road. You have to watch out for the other guy and animals you never know when one might decide to cross the street and into your path. The strongest thing I drink at a bar is sweet tea. People just need to be more responsible and think ahead. Stuff happens!!!!!!!!!
