Actions by a young mother saved her 3-week-old son’s life but she was unable to survive a crash with an empty school bus Thursday on Warrior Drive.

Mother Jessica Moss, 20, of Wentworth Court died at the scene of the crash near Magnolia Drive, said Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans. She was driving with her son, whose name was not released, while he was secured in a child restraint seat. He suffered minor injuries and underwent treatment at Middle Tennessee Medical Center before being released.

“It’s no doubt from investigators the child restraint device and seat saved the child’s life,” Evans said.

Moss drove about 4:20 p.m. on Warrior Drive when the Chevrolet Malibu drifted into the oncoming lane and almost struck a car, the spokesman said.

“She continued crossing the line and struck the school bus head-on,” Evans said.

Bus driver Acie Lawrence, 75, of Foxcroft Drive survived the crash with only minor injuries, he said.

Lawrence drove the privately owned bus to get fuel during fall break. He was driving Bus 55.

“The bus sustained severe damage but crumpled the way it’s designed to absorb the impact of the crash,” Evans said.

Officers from the Fatal Accident Crash Team are investigating. It was unknown if Moss wore a seat belt but preliminary findings indicated she did.

Moss is the 23rd traffic fatality this year in Rutherford County.

My condolences to the family and God Bless them as they raise this little child. Since her child was so young, she was still in her recovery period from childbirth, please look into a physical reason for the accident or a mechanical issue with the car. It doesn't change things but something untoward occurred for this accident to have taken place. Again, please pray for this family and all those touched by this young woman and mother.

Please pray for the family and the young child that will growup without his mother. May God and his angles watch over them always.
