Just yards from the dumpster where a backpack was found containing several mortar rounds and a training hand grenade, sits a playground. CAT MURPHY

A backpack containing several mortar rounds and a training hand grenade was found by the dumpster at Ashwood Cove apartment complex this morning, according to Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans.

"The items will be safely disposed of. THP Bomb Squad, ATF and FBI responded to the scene. At this time, it has not been confirmed if any of them are real. The CID is investigating," said Evans in a release.

Apartment management was unable to comment on the matter, but several residents expressed concern.

"I came home from class and everything was blocked off," said Mattie Crockett, an MTSU student earning her masters in clinical and mental health.

She said she doesn't hold it again the apartment complex, but is worried the backpack could've been dropped off for someone.

"I didn't know what was going on until 30 to 45 minutes after I got home," said Crockett. "I kind of figured if it was was that big a deal they would have evacuated this whole row."

Residents Calli Watkins, Ricki Moody and Andre McGowan watched from the balcony after a friend in another building called to say she'd been evacuated.

"It's really, really weird," said Moody, concerned.

"We saw a bomb squad come and remove it," said Watkins.

"I thought they would have alerted us," said McGowan.

Kelsey Graves and Seth Huffman weren't home when said they received an alert that things were safe, but hadn't been notified there was a problem in the first place.

"I wish they would have let us all know," said Graves, who was concerned about their dog being home alone at the time.
