Special Kids Inc. raised more than $100,000 for children with special needs during its 15th annual fundraising banquet Thursday in Murfreesboro, according to officials with the nonprofit organization.
Presented by Demos' Restaurant and Murfreesboro Medical Clinic and Surgical Center, the event garnered more than 450 attendees who enjoyed a night of food and inspirational messages at World Outreach Church.
Guests began the evening with an extensive silent auction and exhibit highlighting the rich 15-year history of Special Kids before enjoying a three-course dinner from Demos’ Restaurant. Dinner was followed by a program that included keynote speaker Lisa Whelchel, star of the 1980s sitcom “The Facts of Life” and reality show “Survivor: Philippines.”
At the end of the program, Executive Director Chris Truelove unveiled The Christy-Houston Foundation’s grant to Special Kids in the amount of $1.5 million.
The grant will provide funding for expansion, allowing the organization to build a new facility, and expand its services to children with special needs within the region.
Special Kids is a Christian nonprofit providing rehabilitation and nursing services to children with special needs. The Murfreesboro-based ministry started with one child in 1998 and has grown to serve more than 2,500 children from 11 counties in Middle Tennessee.
