One mother was accused of neglecting her two children, ages 5 and 2, after testing positive for drugs and failing to care for them, a sheriff’s deputy reported.

Firefighters were called for a fire Friday morning to the Rucker Road home where a neighbor took the mother’s 5-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy to keep them warm, Deputy Nick Coble reported. The girl reported she hadn’t eaten since the previous night.

When the mother didn’t come to check on her children for several hours, the neighbor found the mother passed out inside her home.

A Department of Children’s Services case worker tested the mother for drugs. She tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana, the deputy reported. Two needles and two bags of a white powder substance were found inside her home.

The children were placed in custody of another family member while DCS and Detective Todd Sparks investigates the living conditions.
