Mitchell-Neilson Elementary School has designed a night for parents.

Jennifer Burks, Mitchell-Neilson Primary School counselor, said the evening is designed to help parents help their children succeed in school.

“We are having this event as an outreach to our parents and to promote parent involvement in the school,” Burks said.

The evening will include dinner, sessions with professionals and a special speech by local inspirational speaker Micheal Burt. The Parent Extravaganza is open to all Mitchell-Neilson parents and will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 at Mitchell Neilson Elementary.

“Parents who attend will have choices of sessions that will help them to get involved in their child's education as well as sessions that promote family interaction,” Burks said.

Parents will have a choice between at least 12 local professionals for the sessions, including health care professionals, bankers and educational professionals, who will give advice on helping students succeed and general parenting tips, Burks said.

Headliner Burt is best known as the former head coach for Riverdale High School’s Lady Warrior basketball team and leading them to the state championship in 2007.

After his team’s run to the state title, Burt decided to make a change in his life. He is the author of three inspirational books and has worked as an inspirational speaker for five years.

“I’m not a parent myself so my focus will not be on how to be a better parent but rather the focus of personal effectiveness, the importance of scripting, the leadership role that a parent assumes, and the long term effects this has on children,” Burt said.

But Burt did work for 12 years coaching teenage girls and learned a lot from that experience, he said.

“All effectiveness with others begins at the personal level, including parenting, and through modeling of the behavior they want from their children this is the first step,” he continued. “It is not the only step as there are multiple roles of leadership, so this night will be about the education of personal effectiveness to develop true leadership, not only at home, but in the day to day lives of those that participate that night.”

Child care will also be available for children in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Door prizes will also be awarded throughout the night.

Mitchell-Neilson Elementary and Primary schools are named for J.C. Mitchell, city schools superintendent until 1945, and Mary Neilson, a city schools teacher.
