Missing woman's cell phone found

A cell telephone belonging to a missing woman was located Tuesday night on Barfield-Crescent Road near Barfield Baptist Church, the Murfreesboro Police spokesman said.

Locating the telephone eliminates police using the device to track the whereabouts of missing Marsiline Smith, 69, of Village Green, said spokesman Kyle Evans.

"She doesn't have the cell phone on her," Evans said. "It definitely eliminates the possibility of using the phone to locate her. It adds extra questions to the investigation."

Smith, who lives behind Kroger's on South Church Street, was reported missing last Thursday. Her Lincoln Navigator was located Friday at Wal-Mart on Rutherford Boulevard. Her husband, Palmer, told police his wife left about 1:30 p.m. Thursday to shop. Wal-Mart video cameras showed a man parked her car about 2:30 p.m., retrieved a bicycle from the back and pedaled away.

In a press conferecne Tuesday, Smith's daughter Lee Ann Barnes asked people who know information about the bicyclist to call police.

Evans said no other evidence was found on Barfield-Crescent Road to help in the search for Smith.

"We're not going to stop until we get answers in this case," Evans said.

People who have information may call the Criminal Investigations Division at 893-2717.

Barnes said Tennessee Highway Patrol helicopters searched the Barfield area while police officers searched the ground for Smith.

Evans said Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents and the U.S. Marshals helped in the search Tuesday.

"We want to extend our gratitude for their assistance in this investigation," Evans said.
