Wow, October is a busy month despite everything going on in the rest of the world.
Just the next two weekends are full of free family-style events. There are other happenings that require a nominal fee as well like the annual Civil War Symposium set for Saturday, Oct. 18.
The symposium will start at 8 a.m. at the Rutherford County Courthouse, while a living-history program will take place in the afternoon at Fortress Rosecrans and Stones River National Battlefield. Symposium activities are slated to conclude at about 4 p.m., organizers reported.
From the response we have received to our ongoing series on the Civil War, we know interest is high for this sort of event. Did you watch any of Ken Burns’ “The Civil War” series on PBS? If you did, I know you are familiar with Barbara J. Fields, who was an important consultant and participant in the series.
Fields, a professor at Columbia University, is one of the top authorities on the transition from slavery to freedom in the United States and has written several books on the topic.
Equally as notable is Dr. William W. Freehling, an expert on the Secession and author of the two-volume, “Road to Disunion,” which highlighted key moments that lead to the Civil War.
Dr. Robert E. Hunt, MTSU history professor, will focus on attitudes toward emancipation among the soldiers of the Army of the Cumberland, which occupied Murfreesboro following the war.
As significant as those speakers might be might be, it’s just a fraction of the events scheduled for the next few weekends in Murfreesboro.
There is, for example, The Middle Half marathon set for Saturday, Oct. 11. Last year, the inaugural race brought 1,000 entrants to Murfreesboro. This year’s field is 1,700 runners from all over the region and is the Cover Story in this week’s Post.
Let’s not forget all of the Halloween-related events; we are featuring them in a Post Top 10. We couldn’t stop at our usual 11 and still we are just hitting the glowing yellow highlights.
October is Rutherford County’s 205th birthday as we pointed out last Sunday with another long list of events.
And there’s all the fall sports events ranging from MTSU football to all those great high school games like Riverdale at Wilson Central, Oakland at Lebanon, La Vergne at Smyrna, Blackman at Siegel, Eagleville at McEwen and MTCS at Community.
Don’t forget the Pearl Ball, Friday Night Live on the Square and the 11th annual Fall Harvest Hayride on the Greenway.
Dang! How do you keep up with them?
An ever-increasing number of area residents and organizations are turning to the Murfreesboro Post’s interactive, online calendar.
Cool, OK .... how do you find it?
First log on at murfreesboropost.com. Then look for the red “ribbon” beneath the Murfreesboro Post logo. The first column is News; the second is Interactive. Select “Calendar” under that menu and you’ve got it.
You can view it calendar style by month or by a list, which would be handy for printing out events. You can even submit community events. That feature is loved by a number of organizations that religiously post their events.
When you click on the “Submit Event” box, you can fill in the time, date, event name and there’s even a spot for describing the event. To submit a calendar item, you must be a member of the Post’s Web site, a free and easy process. You also have to select the “General” category. It’s easy to use, but remember the calendar is for community-wide or club events. Attempts at free advertising will be deleted.
Check it out. We are sure you will discover it is a handy way of keeping track.
