Some thoughts piling up in my cranium:
• So, last Saturday the weather was so mild and slightly overcast, I kept going back inside to check TV listings to see what football games were on. Sadly, I had tricked myself again.
• But, just 41 days until MTSU vs. Clemson.
• Watch out for people who talk about how patriotic or religious (Christian most likely around here), they are. If they are truly either or both, they won’t have to tell you. If they are proclaiming they are so Christian they don’t want gays or non-married people to be able to adopt homeless children, don’t be surprised if they are shacking up with a young intern and taking dirty pictures of her. Seems the more people talk about family values, the less they actually practice them.
• Congrats to Murfreesboro schools for getting off the No Child Left Behind targeted list.
• And, kudos to Rutherford County schools for maintaining “Good Standing” on NLB ratings.
• Wow. How big is the news that some 100-250 new jobs will be brought to Middle Tennessee as Murfreesboro-based The Davis Groupe contracts with a Washington-based company to protype, manufacture and distribute LED lights.
An environmentally smart product with consumer payback is a giant coup for this community, even before considering the potential to eventually bring 2,000 jobs.
• Thanks to all those in the community who adopted more than 8,000 toy ducks in the Child Advocacy Center Duck Derby. Those who participated should know they are helping kids when they absolutely need it the most.
• Well done to the ministers and community leaders who kicked off the Adopt A Street program on State Street last Saturday with a block party. The effort to renew, for lack of a better word, an older part of the inner city got off to an energetic start and holds promise to revitalize the area the best way possible, one block or one street at a time.
• So West Virginia coal miners and companies are mad at U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander because the Tennessee senator is pushing legislation to ban mining by literally blasting the tops off mountains, as hard as it is to believe such is allowed in modern times. So the miners are going to boycott Pigeon Forge and the Smokies. Tourism there may lose like 4,000 visitors, you know, like one block of traffic through Pigeon Forge. Course if the coal folk had their way the attraction would be the Great Flatop Mountains.
• Uuuuh, Mr. President, might not be a good idea to comment and especially call “stupid” a municipal police incident of which you are not fully informed. Just sayin’.
• So should Michael Vick play pro football this season after serving his prison term for involvement in a dog fighting ring? If Pacman Jones had to sit out a year after only being charged, not convicted (albeit with a world record for police ruins), how could a convicted Vick be allowed to play? But Vick killed dogs, Leonard Little and Donte Stallworth killed people in DUI accidents, getting an eight-game and indefinite suspension each. Still, Vick lied about his acts right up to the time of admitting guilt. More important, the two DUI deaths were stupid, but unintentional results. Vick’s dog-fighting involvement was long-term and concerted. NFL commish Roger Goodell will earn his money on this call.
