Mike Pirtle: Tomato-growing season bombed, but what about those Titans!

OK, maybe it’s because they’re 5-0. Maybe it’s because they are defensive monsters, and I’ve always loved strong defensive teams. Maybe it’s because they find creative ways to win. Yeah, it’s the Titans who have me excited. I’m still excited about Middle Tennessee’s Blue Raiders, having witnessed the two superb and exciting home wins this season, over 4-1 Maryland and trash-talking Florida Atlantic on that phenomenal Hail Mary from Joe Craddock to Malcolm Beyah. Every week college games end on Hail Mary tries. Most fall incomplete or get intercepted. So, when you pull one off and truly snatch victory from the snapping jaws of defeat, it’s exciting enough to stick for a while, and it sure wants you to see what might happen next. Unfortunately, the Raiders have hit the road and won’t be back for almost a month. But, the Titans just keep on rolling. In what was supposed to be one of the top two divisions of the NFL, they have knocked off two division rivals, plus the detested Baltimore Ravens, and could likely play undefeated hosts to the vaulted Colts in a couple of weeks on a Monday night. What most likely makes the Titans such a point of interest is the sorry state of affairs elsewhere. Although forcing myself to watch the presidential debates, and only nodding off during the first one, I have long since tired of the presidential campaign. I know it’s important, hence the effort on the TV debates, but I’m at the point where I feel pretty strongly I know the two men involved, what they represent and what they offer. I do know I haven’t heard anything from either one that surprised or swayed me. Barring something dramatic, I know where I stand and honestly now just get annoyed by the political games both must now employ because that is the game, the competition at hand. They probably don’t like it anymore than me, but it is what is required. And, let’s just not even get into the economy. Like everyone else, I’m just sitting here scared, waiting to see what is going to happen next and keeping my fingers crossed really tightly hoping things will finally settle down and start showing some improvement. Oh, that’s why the Titans are so exciting. No BS like politics, and no disappointments and no scariness like the economy. Do, do, de, do, do, GO TITANS! ••• Dang, did we need that rain last week or what? I ran a search at murfreesboropost.com for the weekly weather stats we post every Saturday and discovered we registered three days of precipitation in September. Well, officially three days. The readings were 0.11, 0.01 and 0.08 of an inch. Not even a fifth of an inch, a fifth for goodness sakes, for the whole month. And, of course, zip for October until the 7th. Not counting those mistings in September the last true rain I could find was 1.64 inches on Aug. 26. That’s a long time and a lot of hot temperatures – 12 days of mercury readings 90 or above in September – without rain. Geez, some of the bushes in my lawn were offering doggie treats to neighborhood mutts for just a quick pee. ••• Well, it’s official. This was absolutely the worst tomato-growing season ever in the Pirtle household. As has been noted here probably more often than most care to know, we love tomatoes at the Pirtle household and grow a bunch at the missus’ family garden plot in southwest Warren County. Well, we usually grow a lot. This year was pitiful, even worse than last year with its record drought. Timing of the little rain that fell in 2007 brought a decent harvest. This year we didn’t bring home as many tomatoes as I gave away last year. And, the ones the missus did harvest were largely of the ping-pong ball size. Oh, well, as Cubs fans always say, there’s always next year.
