Mike Pirtle: Time to support global warming

All right. That’s it. I’ve had enough.

I am officially coming out in favor of global warming.

Sure, some may still be debating whether global warming exists. Absolutely, questions remain whether we can do anything about it. We don’t know if our efforts would be worth the cost.

I don’t care.

If there is global warming, I’m fer it.

I’m tired of cold weather after two almost solid months of cold, rain and way, way too much wind out of the north.

Yeah, winters were worse when I was a kid. I had a snowsuit for goodness sakes. I’m not buying a snowsuit.

In my college days it seemed I was always putting on or taking off snow boots with the inevitable mess that resulted.

Honestly, snow would be better than just cold, gray weather that goes on and on and on and on and on… you get the idea.

Kind of a real life but really boring “Groundhog Day.”

Now in December the cold weather was bearable even when it was unbearable. Folks were running around saying, “This feels like Christmas.” I just thought, “Humbug, feels like frostbite.”

Still, you had the holiday cheer in spiritual and liquid form to get us through December even if it was the coldest and wettest December we have experienced in many, many years.

And, we were probably set up a little by the fact that cold weather didn’t show up here until the last month of the year. As noted here previously, our first killing frost in Murfreesboro proper was actually Dec. 1.

So, we were living the good, easy life until the hard weather showed up. (Hmm, kinda like the economy.)

January was everything January could be, plus two.

Gone were the parties, the family dinners, the gifts, the food of the holiday season. Pretty soon all the college football games concluded.

Then it was just another gray, cold, windy January day.

Sure, this weekend we got a little excitement with some snow and ice. Lots of folks got the day off Friday (newspaper people didn’t). The chance for snowball fights, sledding and igloos offered a break at least.

But, I’ve had enough. Enough of scurrying indoors, enough of cabin fever, enough of nothing on TV (why are they showing reruns when people are trapped inside with few options), enough of bulky coats, enough of light-deprived, bone-chilled people with ill tempers.

So, if it takes global warming to get past this, I guess the polar bears just need to evolve into walruses.

I’m too cold to care anymore.

I want some sunshine without having to scan through the zillion worthless cable stations to find a “Hawaii 5-0” rerun.

I want to wear a golf shirt.

I want to grill without having to peek through a window to avoid flame up.

I want to need SPF 45.

I’m calling Al Gore right now and telling him to shut up.

While you have him on the phone, can I tell him to shut up also?
