Here are some quick hitters on Tuesday’s thank-goodness-it’s-finally-here election:
• Wow. As of Friday the Associated Press reported one in seven was still undecided on the presidential race.
As one undecided voter noted he was still weighing Obama’s unwelcome tax policy against McCain’s unacceptable war policy.
What does the undecided number mean?
You should vote.
While polls showing Obama are ahead are probably correct, they are a lot like a middle of the fourth quarter score – it’s not the final score.
With one in seven voters on the fence, Obama supporters should vote to make sure he stays ahead; McCain backers should vote because 14 percent can turn any election.
• Wow again. More than 68,000 of us took advantage of early voting. Amazing.
One result should be reasonable voting times at the polls Tuesday. If six early vote sites can process close to 50 percent of eligible voters over a handful of days, 48 precincts should be able to move the rest fairly well in one day.
But, try to avoid the after-work voting lines.
• After taking control of the Tennessee Senate two years ago, state Republicans now want to take control of the legislature and thereby earn the right to name the secretary of state, treasurer, etc., and maybe more importantly take a majority on county election commissions.
State Democrats want to take the Senate back.
Enough seats are up for election for either party to be successful.
That’s just a little picture in the big picture, or visa versa depending upon your inclinations. |
