Mike Pirtle: New Year's drags along December's cold temps

Well, any hopes a new calendar might bring new weather didn’t work out so well.

OK, we did get new weather – even colder weather.

Geez.

Honestly, I can’t remember a December that was just cold constantly. But, this one didn’t miss it much with just a couple of nice days breaking up what was generally cold, albeit not terribly low temps, and wet. Chilly, wet and gray skies along with unusually blustery winds made December of ’09 imminently forgettable.

Well, until 2010 showed up, dragging along every colder temps, and pretty darn cold ones for what we are used to in these parts. Looks like a bundle-up week ahead.

Is there some old saying that a cold New Year Day means a warmed-up economy.

Here’s hoping.

Remember when you started watching college bowl games at 10 a.m. New Year’s Day, tried to have at least two TVs set up and stayed glued to the tube until the end of the Orange Bowl late that night?

Remember how you ate all day while watching, probably spending considerable time planning the day’s menu?

Remember how by the time the last Hail Mary pass fell incomplete you were so bleary-eyed you had to feel your way to bed?

But, that glorious extravaganza was it. The end of college football season. A magnificent overindulgence that left even the most rabid of college fans sated.

I miss those days.

Sure, I watched football New Year’s Day, and many of the bowls leading up to it, just as in days past.

But, as many games, five each, were on television Jan. 2 as Jan. 1. And, four games are yet to be played, including the Fiesta, Orange and BCS championship.

Well, yeah, I will probably watch them, or at least watch at them.

Instead of one overwhelming, incredible celebration, college bowl season now is like being on a diet. You get one treat a day.

I long for the college bowl orgy.

On the other hand, we have certainly been overwhelmed with bizarre college coaching change news.

Florida’s Urban Meyer resigned – no, on leave – what next soap opera was weird enough but the Texas Tech firing of Mike Leach had National Enquirer material what with the involvement by erstwhile cheerleader momesque ESPN’s Craig James, who apparently is disliked by a whole lot more people than just me.

Hey, Coach Rick Stockstill, have we told you lately what a great coach, man and overall human being you are?

Thanks for being all of that. And here. Stick around, OK?

Well, let’s see Bart Gordon announced the first of December he would not seek re-election to Congress from the 6th District.

Before the day was over GOP voices all across the district were yelling, “I’m in” the race to succeed Gordon.

Uh … still waiting for a peep from a Democrat.
