My love-hate relationship with fall leaves is at its apex.
For at least two weeks I, as with most folks in this area, have reveled in the beauty bursting out all over our community as the colors of tree leaves change.
Some of the natural sights can literally take your breath. The maples as always are the stars of the show.
I’ve said before and will repeat that maple-lined East Main Street Murfreesboro is as pretty a fall sight as you will see anywhere.
The bloom comes off the rose, to mix metaphors, when I pull into my driveway.
Among the many unfortunate traits of the many silver maples in our lawns is that the leaves do not produce especially vibrant colors. They are pretty, but not striking.
The amount of leaves in my lawn is dumbfounding. Staggering. Bewildering. Frustrating.
Extremely frustrating.
Since my latest lawn service recently acquired a real job, I suddenly find myself pretty much solely responsible for lawn maintenance.
I do not care for the position. I would rather try to eat a flaming cat. Without catsup.
Last Sunday afternoon, however, I bowed to the inevitable and made the first round of leaf mowing. Yeah, I just chop them to pieces, receiving a certain perverse pleasure in doing so.
Clearing the mounds that pile up on the roof is always an adventure. It isn’t really that difficult but even a testosterone-overloaded male recognizes the significant risk involved.
But, it is what it is.
And, the view of the colorful landscape arising from atop the house is quite striking. You just have to remember to be very still.
This beautiful fall show is coming to an end soon. Take some time today and get out and enjoy it.

Wow.
Quite a last 10 days or so for Siegel High School.
The girls’ volleyball team makes the TSSAA state tournament.
Likewise the girls’ soccer team.
The Stars’ band wins MTSU’s Contest of Champions, a first for a Murfreesboro high school since the days of Central for goodness sakes.
And, Siegel High School AP Honors English teacher Matthew Marlatt Wednesday received a $25,000 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award, an honor given to select outstanding educators each year.
And, yet for all those honors it won’t be long before one of the other schools puts together its own amazing string of accomplishments.
I hope people recognize that while we certainly have weaknesses and areas for improvement we have some tremendously outstanding schools here.

Red light at corner of St. Clair and Memorial, trying to cross Memorial just after noon Friday.
Three cars pull into the intersection even though traffic is full on the other side, blocking the intersection in violation of state law (driving rule: if the intersection is not clear, do not pull into it.)
Light changes but crossing traffic is blocked because of the idiots stuck in the intersection. Traffic finally clears but two others cars run light anyway.
Then motorist in turning lane on St. Clair bluff the oncoming traffic and turn in front, claiming the right of way by outlaw tactics.
