The Middle Tennessee women's track and field team earned a top 25 ranking in the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association weekly poll.

The women's squad moved up nine spots from 31st overall to 22nd largely on the performance of senior Zamzam Sangau last weekend at the GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, Mich. Sangau took first place overall in the 800 meters in an NCAA Provisional time of 2:06.11. Her time ranks 14th in the NCAA.

Poll points are gained for a team when an athlete earns an NCAA qualifying mark in an individual event. More points are awarded based on the NCAA ranking of the performance.

Seniors Sarah Nambawa, Brittany Cox, Sangau and junior Cherice Robertson have combined for a total of 43.67 points for the Blue Raiders. Nambawa's points were scored in long and triple jump. She currently ranks fifth in the nation in both events. Cox has scored in the weight throw which she is ranked sixth in the NCAA and the shot put which she ranks 13th. Robertson earned an NCAA Provisional time in the 55-meter hurdles.

"This is a great reward for all the athletes especially the seniors," said head coach Dean Hayes. "All of the seniors have made great improvements taking on new events and growing in the events which they were originally recruited to compare."

The men's team is currently ranked 80th in the poll which is tops in the Sun Belt Conference.

The men's and women's team will return to action in two weeks as they play host to the Sun Belt Conference Championships at Murphy Center on February 27-28.
