Middle Tennessee Boulevard between East Main Streets and Greenland Drive will get a face lift in the coming years.

Murfreesboro City Council will consider a contract with MTSU to improve the road sometime before 2014.

“It’ll take a couple of years to get the design set and acquiring the right-of-way,” Murfreesboro Traffic Director Dana Richardson explained, adding the city is just getting the ball rolling by approving the contract.

The project will rebuild and widen Middle Tennessee Boulevard, from Main to Greenland, to a four/five lane road with landscaped medians, sidewalks, bike lanes and an Intelligent Transportation System, as well as underground utilities and intersection pedestrian plazas.

The contract stipulates the project should be completed by 2014.

The project is projected to cost around $9.5 million with almost $6 million funded by the federal government, more than $2.4 million funded by the city and the remainder funded by MTSU.

“There’s a substantial amount coming from the federal government,” Richardson said.

Public Hearings:
- The city council will hold a public hearing to consdier a proposed amendatory ordinance to the Sign Ordinance, dealing with temporary flag signs. Click here to read the amendment.

- The city council will also hold a public hearing to amend the Zoning Ordinance and the Zoning Map of the city to rezone the territory near the corner of South Church Street and Rushwood Drive from Residential Multi-Family Sixteen (RM-16) District to General Office (OG) District. Map

That is great news about Middle Tenn. Blvd. The section being discussed is hard to navigate at times and unsightly visitors of Murfreesboro. MTSU is a great asset to our City and I think we should at times "go in together" and assist the University with such projects.

I hope that they do a better job of planning left turn lanes then they did at MTSU Blvd. & Main. The decorative median is too long and takes up space needed to get into the left turn lane. People wanting to turn left are often trapped in the "straight lane" even when traffic is light. I thnk that our traffic planners are a little long on theory and studies and short on common sense.

There are some beautiful homes along that section of Middle Tennessee Boulevard. I hope they do not take all their front yards and leave the homes sitting right on the edge of the street.
