Buchanan-Whitworth Middle School and Oakland Middle School are on track to open in time for the next school year in August.

“The middle schools are on schedule to be open for next August,” Rutherford County Schools spokesman James Evans said.

The Rutherford County Board of Education will get a full update on the building process of the schools at its monthly meeting Thursday night.

Despite some set backs because of cold weather and the holidays, good progress is being made on both schools.

At Buchanan-Whitworth, the skeleton of the building is almost complete, as is utility work and the road leading to the school.

At Oakland Middle, the core of the building is almost complete and wall rough in is underway throughout the school. Water and sewer service is mostly complete.

Masonry work on both schools will begin when weather permits.

Why is Oakland Middle being built so low in the ground? I can't believe that the site was not raised before construction started! It looks as if the school is being built in a earth bowl. I'm sure eventually the water run off will make it to Bushman Creek but how much water will flood the school before it can make it the creek? I can see a mold and mildew problem in the school's future.

Republicaninboro, some friends and I were talking about that very same thing recently. OMS is several feet below the road grade, which can only mean problems for the future. You drive by and can almost see over the roof of the school. I plan on driving by tomorrow after all this rain we've gotten to take a look and see how bad it is.

Oms has some massive infrastructure for stormwater. Could have been cheaper to put it in versus rasing the building site.

Well after paying a permium for the site with a good chunk in the flood plain ($54,000/acre) they didn't have enough to raise the grade. Its ashame they couldn't build a school that match Pittard or for that matter built ittard large enough to allow for growth. Why does this area seem to not want one school for K-8? It seems it would consolidate services that will be provided at both sites.
