The Eagleville girls finished 4th in their district tournament with a 37-29 loss to Huntland.
The Eagleville boys beat Huntland 43-41 at Huntland for the district tournament championship. Congrats to Coach Joey Reed and the Eagles.
District 7AAA Girls play at Blackman High – Round 1.
An early rebound deficit and 15 first half turnovers killed La Vergne’s (6-21) chances to upset the Oakland girls (19-8) as the Patriots won going away 65-25.
For Oakland, Monica Barrett had six 3’s in the first half to pace the scoring and lead Oakland to another win and their best season in years. Ke Ke Cook followed with 12 and Ellen Riggins
had nine.
Note: Barrett’s threes were back to back to back to back to back to back and none of them touched the rim. Amazing!
For La Vergne, Alex Swope had nine points and Marrissa Brimm chipped in six.
Oakland takes on No. 1 seed Riverdale (27-0) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Blackman High.
Siegel (22-6) won the second girl’s game of the evening over Smyrna 42-25.
The game started slowly and nearly ground to a halt amid a sea of missed shots, turnovers and stalling tactics. After a tiny 13-11 Siegel halftime lead, Siegel’s Maddie Denton decided she’d had enough and hit three 3’s in the third quarter. Siegel maintained the lead the rest of the way over a scrappy Smyrna team that finished 4-21.
In the scoring departments, Siegel’s Shanice Cason had 14 points and Maddie Denton had 11.
Smyrna was led by Anisha Paul with eight points and Ty Hampton with six.
Siegel will play host to Blackman (19 – 5) Saturday at 6 p.m.
District 7AAA Boys play at Blackman High – Round 1
Shooting 38 points on 15 of 40 shots will usually get you beat, especially when the other stats were very close.
This is exactly what happened to the Smyrna boys (8-17) in a narrow 52-43 loss to host Blackman. This game was close throughout but Blackman won the final quarter 12-5 and that proved to be enough for the win that will send Blackman to the Region.
Blackman also had the balanced scoring that coaches love as Darius Thompson had 15 points, Greg Peak had 12, Alex McMiller had 10 and Leroy Jefferson had nine.
For Smyrna Terrance Malone had 11 points and Wayne Jones finished with nine.
Blackman will host No. 1 seed Siegel (27-2) at 4:30 Saturday afternoon.
In the evening’s final game the Riverdale boys (18-9) sprinted to a 15-5 lead and maintained it the rest of the way to beat Oakland (4-25), 80-62.
Oakland’s lack of size, lack of scoring and the plain old bad luck that has plagued them all year sent them to a sub-par season.
Coach Mike Wright and the Pats will be back, of this I am certain.
In the win, Riverdale had balanced scoring as Vari Craig had 23 points, D.J. Smith had 17, Donya Burnett had 15 and T.J. Chesterfield had 12.
For Oakland, Christian Adams had a game high 24 points while Rashod Carter had 10 and Kody Brown had nine.
Riverdale will take on No. 2 seed La Vergne (19-6) at 7:30 Saturday night. |
