Organizers of the Murfreesboro Half Marathon distributed more than $30,000 in donations to local organizations from the 2011 event proceeds this week.
Groups receiving donations, totaling $34,450, during the noon meeting of the Murfreesboro Parks & Recreation commission were: Oaklands Historic House and Museum, Sons of the Confederacy, Main Street Revitalization, Try Boro Kids Racing Series, Rutherford County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Murfreesboro Police and the One Hundred Club (Police Benevolent Fund), Hershey Track & Field, Blue Raider Athletic Association, Friends of the Greenway, and the Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department.
“These groups have either helped with our mission of providing a high-quality half marathon, or their mission is aligned with ours by promoting health and fitness for Murfreesboro residents,” said Jim Genét, president of the Murfreesboro Half Marathon Board of Directors.
Groups receiving donations last month included organizations that helped out with the event in a variety of capacities, such as stuffing goody bags, parking, registration and race day course monitoring.
The Discovery Center at Murfree Springs, Kappa Alpha Fraternity, District Lions Club, Rotary Club, Noon Exchange Club, Riverdale ROTC, Girl Scout Troop 1609, State Farm Insurance, Junior League of Murfreesboro, Books from Birth, Special Kids, Greenhouse Ministries, Holy Cross Church and Siegel High School’s cross country team were instrumental in providing many volunteers hours for the event.
Presented by Middle Tennessee Medical Center, the Murfreesboro Half Marathon, or The Middle Half, has donated more than $100,000 to local organizations over the past five years.
The date of the 2012 race will be announced in April, and registration will begin June 1. Last year, the popular race sold out within 11 days. |
