Mental evaluations were ordered Tuesday for an MTSU student charged with terrorism with threatening emails and three counts of arson.
Student Justin Jamal Davis, 19, of Antioch was charged Thursday after MTSU Police Lt. Matt Foster accused him of sending out the emails and setting three fires to Miss Mary Hall residence hall.
MTSU Police Chief Buddy Peaster said Thursday the emails sent to MTSU Police and faculty members Wednesday threatened “large scale destruction” if classes weren’t canceled. Because of the threat, MTSU canceled classes Thursday and Friday, two days before fall break.
Foster reported Davis was developed as a suspect and questioned by law enforcement officers Thursday evening.
“Davis confessed to setting the fires and sending the emails,” Foster reported.
Attorney Lynda F. Jones, who represents Davis, and Assistant District Attorney Tom Jackson agreed to seek a mental evaluation for the student.
The Guidance Center’s staff will evaluate Davis for his competency to stand trial and his mental capacity.
Jones originally asked for a bond reduction from $500,000 to $75,000 but her motion was continued until Nov. 25. In seeking the reduction, Jones stated Jones didn’t have a prior criminal history and was not considered a flight risk. His mother, stepfather and grandmother pledged to attend court with him.
