Murfreesboro City Schools may pay its next director more than the previous director.

The city school board met Tuesday night to discussion the compensation structure for the next director of schools.

After a long discussion, the board settled at from $103,000 to $139,000. The next director’s salary will be based on experience and expertise.

Board member Ray Butrum argued the board doesn’t need to hire someone who is there for the money.

“If they have the schools system at heart and they want to do what’s best for the children they’re not doing it for the money anyway,” he said. “I don’t think that paying more necessarily gets you a better person.”

Board member Nancy Duggin disagreed, saying “you get what you pay for.”

Previous director Marilyn Mathis was paid $118,000 annually plus a $5,000-per-year car allowance, insurance and benefits. Mathis retired Oct. 1 to pursue a job in the public sector.

The vote on compensation is part of the on-going search to appoint a new director of schools, which should be completed around the New Year.

It seems a shame that the citizens of Murfreesboro pay two people to manage the education of their children(one for k-6 and one for 7-12). If everyone is so upset about taxes and such, why are there no cries for consolidation of the school systems? Most of the reasons for not combining ten years ago have disappeared.
