Imagine a world without leaders. Men and women who aren’t afraid to step up to the plate and dare make a difference in society.

The Jennings Jones Foundation and Murfreesboro City Schools are making sure that scenario remains just that: a scenario. Their summer 2010 collaboration project is the Leadership Collaboration Camp, taking place June 21 through July 2.

“The camp consists of 21 upcoming fifth graders, who were either nominated or selected by their teachers for their leadership qualities and characteristics,” said Gina Graham, a second-grade teacher at John Pittard Elementary.

It hopes to assist students in gaining awareness of their responsibility to contribute to the community.

In the first week, students toured Sloan’s Cycle Shop, Nissan, the current and new Middle Tennessee Medical Centers, Murfreesboro City Police Department, Rutherford County 911 Dispatch and the Agricultural, Recreational and Mass Communication Centers at MTSU. They visited with State Sen. Bill Ketron and Director of MCS Dr. Linda Gilbert also.

For this week’s agenda, campers will see the Murfreesboro Water Department, Murfreesboro Electric Department, Studio S, Main Street, City Hall, Channel 3, Rutherford County Special Operations and Rutherford County Courthouse. Additionally, students will meet Murfreesboro Mayor Tommy Bragg and Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess.

“We will have a graduation at the end of camp,” Graham added. “[The ceremony] is Friday morning for the students and their parents.”
