Murfreesboro Board of Education pared down the list of executive search firms to three in its on-going search for a new director of schools.

“This is our chance to get what our school system needs,” School Board Member Butch Campbell said.

The board settled on the Tennessee School Board Association (TSBA); Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates (HYA) from Illinois; and McPherson and Jacobson from Nebraska.

Each firm will have 30 minutes to present a search plan and the board will have an hour to question the firms at the next school board meeting Tues. Aug. 11.

TSBA has extensive experience in conducting director of schools searches in Tennessee. It offers three options, ranging in price from $5,000 to $20,000.

The board expressed interest in the middle option at a cost of $8,500 and involves advertising for the job regionally and conducting community interviews.

HYA most recently helped Metro-Nashville Schools to find a new director. HYA proposed a national search at a cost of $19,500 plus expenses.

McPherson and Young has conducted searches for a variety of school systems across the nation. It proposed either a regional or national search at a price of $11,500 plus expenses.

The board will meet multiple times in the next few weeks to discuss the requirements for the next director of schools and select a search firm.

When retires Oct. 1, she will take a new job as executive director of the Association of Independent and Municipal Schools.

Mathis has served as director of MCS for 12 years and has spent 26 years working in the school system.

I agree with previous posters. Unless a city school system is inherently better than a county system (and why should it be?) there is a need to eliminate the administrative costs of the city schools and allow the taxpayers in the city and county to fund the county schools. Duplication of services in government needs to be curbed, and the schools should be better for it.

It time for the city to realize that two separate schools systems is antiquated logic and a waste of tax payer’s money. Tax payers expect the best bang for their bucks and two separate school systems is just a waste of money and part of taking care of the good old boy network in the Boro that has just got to change as the make up of Murfreesboro becomes more diverse in ideas and forward thinking

tuffgirl: what does the search for a new director have to do with the " good old boy network ?" What do you think the good old boy network is ? Please explain...If you are suggesting a consolidated school system then why don't you get the ball rolling to have this done ? Maybe now is a good time for some discussion...

If you put the two systems together you will eleminate jobs created by friends for friends and we will have a long hard fight to get rid of the city system.
