MCS names interim director candidates

Murfreesboro City Schools will appoint an interim director before its regular monthly meeting Tuesday afternoon.

The school board wants to have an interim director in place before current Director of Schools Marilyn Mathis retires Oct. 1. The interim director will be responsible for maintaining the system until a permanent director is appointed.

Applicants for the interim position are:

• Zane Cantrell, a retired City Schools educator for 40 years, including 36 years as principal who last served at Black Fox Elementary in 2003-04;

• Carolyn Baldwin Tucker, former director of graduate education for Lipscomb University in Nashville (2000-2002) and 30-year educator for Nashville Public Schools as a teacher, principal and elementary schools administrator;

• Andy Spears, director of policy and research for Tennessee Stand for Children since February 2007 and former press secretary for Tennessee Senate Democratic Caucus (January 2003 to January 2007);

• Charles Lindsey, a former Knox County Schools superintendent (July 1, 1999 to February 2007);

• Paul Doyle, a retired superintendent of schools for Paris Special Schools District in Tennessee and a former 27-year educator with Nashville Public Schools as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, human resource specialist and human resources director;

• James H. Turbeville, a former superintendent for Tattnall County (Ga.) Schools (2005-2009) and Raymond (N.H.) Schools (2001-2005), and a former director of high school curriculum and administration for Metro Nashville Public Schools (1994-2001); and

• David M. Roper, a former executive director for the Office of Innovative Services for North Carolina Schools in Guilford County (June 2007 to July 2009).

Mr Zane Cantrell is an experienced and respected educator. He knows so many of the teachers, principals and administrators. He is the very logical choice. He will be light years ahead of the other candidates that would be brought in.

I don't agree. I think Zane Cantrell is prehistoric in his educational philosophies and would only hinder the school system from progressing. This is by personal experience with him. Although this is only for interim director, I still don't feel he has the current knowledge and experience for this generation.
