McFadden’s Robotics Team is headed to Dallas and nationals after blowing away the competition in Alabama last weekend.
“To get to this level against the competition that we have competed against is truly amazing,” McFadden Principal Clark Blair said.
In October, McFadden won the Music City BEST, the local robotics competition, at David Lipscomb University and a slot to compete against 55 other schools (eight middle schools and 47 high schools) at regionals at Auburn last weekend.
McFadden won five different awards at Auburn including Best Middle School and the Robotics Award, which is given to the top school, Blair said.
“Our team is now making plans to go to Dallas, Texas in April to compete in the national competition. We will be the only middle school in the event which is limited to 12 teams in the nation,” Blair explained.
McFadden also won 3rd place in the Founder's Award for Creative Design, 1st place for the Most Photogenic Robot and the Igus Top Gun Award.
For the robotics competition, students design, construct and operate a robot built from a kit of parts provided by BEST (Boosting, Engineering, Science and Technology). The kit includes parts such as wood and PVC, along with the remote-control components necessary to control the robot.
BEST is a nonprofit volunteer-based organization that holds the annual six-week competition designed for middle and high school students to encourage them to pursue careers in engineering, science and technology.
In 2006 the Lipscomb University Raymond B. Jones School of Engineering sponsored a hub and named it Music City BEST. Lipscomb with help from Nissan, North America provides materials and equipment free of charge.
