On Wednesday, April 22, McFadden School of Excellence students will be participating in a school-wide Earth Day Celebration.

They will travel to different areas in Rutherford County to donate their time to projects benefit our community and the environment.

Together, the students can show others how easy it is to make a difference. One person can find a way to improve their community and make their world a better place.

Kindergartners are collecting books for “reuse” in the Linebaugh Library Bookmobile and planting flowers for children of Franklin Heights Preschool.

First, sixth, and seventh grades are cleaning community “green spaces.”

Second and third grades are planting in local gardens to improve habitats for butterflies.

Fourth and fifth grades are participating in the Stones River National Battlefield’s Native Plant Restoration Project, a program dedicated to eradicating invasive exotic plants and re-establishing natives.

Eighth grade students have two projects: cleaning the Murfree Spring Wetland, which serves a multitude of functions including protecting and improving our water quality, and landscaping two new Habitat for Humanity homes.

The school is also participating in the Doubletree Hotel’s “Teaching Kids to CARE” Initiative: Cans and Bottles for a Cause – Community Recycling Fundraiser to Benefit Schools.

For two weeks in the month of April, students, parents, teachers and staff will collect aluminum cans and plastic bottles with the help of their families for recycling. The challenge: How many recyclables can we keep out of the county landfill? Monies raised from the sale of our recyclables will benefit the school library.

The day will culminate with an Earth Day Celebration in the school gymnasium at 1:15 p.m., where McFadden will hold the second birthday party of the City of Murfreesboro’s public transportation system, Rover.

Scheduled to appear are City Mayor Tommy Bragg, County Mayor Ernest Burgess, Rover Director Bob Nugent and a representative from the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Earth Day was designed to create an awareness of our individual and collective impact on the planet. Through community involvement, the McFadden hopes to demonstrate that every person can have a positive impact on our environment; everyone can make a difference. McFadden’s projects will accomplish many objectives in one day.

These kids should be in school instead of out cleaning up things and planting flowers and such. Something like this should be done on a weekend and be voluntary, not part of a school curriculum.
