On a perfect Monday night for youth baseball, three teams became Murfreesboro Baseball Association Champions in front of a packed house at Barfield Crescent Park. The crowd was very vocal, especially at the end when a titlist was determined. Regardless on how the games worked out all of the teams had a tremendous season.
During the post-game celebration all of the players that performed on Monday night received a trophy, and the parents took lots of photos of the players with their awards.
The best game of the night was in the 10-year old kid pitch division, in which the Rangers held on for the 8-6 win over the Royals. The Royals had a 4-1 lead early in the game, but the Rangers’ Alec Patton crushed a pitch over the fence to tie the game at four.
“At first, I thought it hit the fence,” Patton said after the game. “But the umpire waved his finger and I knew it was gone.”
It was Patton’s first ever-home run, and his mom said they were able to find the ball and got to keep it. That will be something that he will probably remember for the rest of his life.
The Rangers had an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but the Royals had a runner at second and tying run at the plate. However, the Rangers relief pitcher struck him out to end the game.
“It was nerve-racking,” Rangers head coach Mark Holdcraft said of the final inning. “They stepped up at every opportunity and they had a sound performance.” Last year’s team had only won two games, but most of the players came back for this season.
In the 11/12 year-old Minors division, the Cubs finished out the season with only one loss as they held on for a 13-6 win over the Braves. The team had a well-rounded performance, including a great pitching performance from starting pitcher Kyle Wilson and closer Brayden Siren.
“I’m very excited to be a part of a championship,” Siren said after receiving his first-place trophy.
The Cubs had a mix of experience and kids that had never played the sport until this year. Some of the players have been with Cubs head coach Mark Wilson since they were five and six years old. While, Wilson also coached a pair of twins that did not play baseball until this season.
“It feels great for the kids,” Wilson said after the game. ‘I’m very proud of them, they have really improved from the beginning of the season.”
The best celebration of the night came in the nine-year old division in which the Cardinals knocked off a game Dodgers team 15-1 in four innings. The Dodgers pulled off the surprise of the tournament when they defeated the No. 1 seed, Braves in the semifinals.
In the finals, the Cardinals jumped out early thanks to a great offense and a top-notch pitching staff and tremendous defense to pick up the win.
One of the winning pitchers, Hunter Young said he was happy to be a champion. However, the best part of the celebration came during the post-game interview with head coach Tim Westbrooks when his players gave him a sports drink shower.
“It felt great to get that shower,” Westbrooks said while soaking wet. “It was definite a refreshing bath of victory.”
On Saturday, five MBA champions were crowned that included the Yankees (4 year-old), Giants (5), Tigers (6), Diamondbacks (7), and the Tigers (8). |
