Murfreesboro City Schools Director Marilyn Mathis announced Thursday she will retire from her position effective Oct. 1.

Mathis began her career with MCS in 1983 serving as an assistant superintendent prior to being named as the director of schools Jan. 1, 1998.

“I have truly had a fabulous 26-year career with Murfreesboro City Schools,” Mathis said. “During my 12 years as director of schools, I have had the opportunity of putting a number of initiatives in place because of the support of various board members and because of a superlative staff of individuals who daily give their all to focusing on what is in the best interest of each child.”

Mathis also announced that upon her retirement she will have the opportunity to continue working in the field of education.

She has accepted a position to serve at the state level as Executive Director of the Association for Independent and Municipal Schools (AIMS), an organization that represents city and special school districts.

Education is thankless job....Marilyn did a fantastic job, as evidenced by the success of thousands of pupils in later life....everyone should try to please parents who don't discipline their own children??!!

I'm not knocking Marilyn Mathis, but she has been doing this job for a long time. Maybe it will be good to have someone with a different perspective and possibly fresher ideas.

Trying to please such a large number of people is a thankless job. She has brought many new and innovative programs to the system and at the same time assured these programs were in the best interest of children. She has always maintained a professional attitude, something which cannot be said for others. Best Wishes for an enjoyable retirement.

GOOD BYE!!!!! I pulled my children from MCS because of her and a certain Principal with MCS. My child was injured at school on school grounds and NO ONE DID A THING ABOUT IT!!!!! My child was not one of the "special kids" she made good grades and rarely got in trouble. The trouble she did get in was minor. So, when I was never even notified by school staff I was furious!!!! When I brought this to their attention the comments I received made me sick! Accidents Happen!!! Yes they do my daughter could have broken her foot at Walmart but at least Walmart would have the decenancy to tell me she fell! I had to go to county school officals just to get Ms. Mathis to have her office return my calls!!! Yea great job there!!!! Thank Goodness my children are no longer under their watchful eye!!

Some problems in the transportation department went unnoticed, especially when the new director showed up about three years ago. I loved that job.

With Director Mathis leaving, the time is urgent to consolidate the school boards into one. Do not search for a new director.

Commissioner Mike Sparks had it right at the County Commission meeting today, there should only be a single school board and that board should have taxing authority. If they did costs would be reduced immediateley as the Superindendant and the School Boasrd would be directly responsible to the taxpayers. As it now stands they shove it off onto the Commission and Council.

Mrs. Mathis has done an outstanding job. Half of Murfreesboro City Schools have been built under her leadership. Being the director is thankless but she has taken it on boldly and with poise.

There will always be a debate about having two systems but I for one support MCS. It is a small district where the children and parents are given more opportunities rather than just being numbers.
