Deputies arrested a North Carolina man weaving from lane to lane in a stolen ambulance early Sunday after he exited off Interstate 24, a Rutherford County Sheriff's corporal reported.
Driver Bruce Burdick, 55, of Morgantan, N.C., was charged with theft of an ambulance owned by Med-Stat of Manchester, Cpl. Ryan Huggins reported. The ambulance was stolen from Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro. The ambulance was valued at $120,000.
While on patrol, dispatchers alerted deputies about the stolen ambulance.
Murfreesboro Police reported Burdick was at the medical center when he allegedly stole the ambulance.
Huggins observed the ambulance traveling on Interstate 24 westbound past the Buchanan Road exit. Dispatchers verified the vehicle was the stolen ambulance. Huggins turned on the emergency equipment to try to stop the driver.
“The driver maintained speeds between 60 and 70 mph and was weaving from lane to lane,” Huggins reported.
He exited at the Beech Grove exit and stopped under the overpass. Huggins ordered him out of the ambulance and arrested him.
Burdick was taken to MTMC where he was cleared medically and taken to the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.
Huggins also charged Burdick with evading arrest. He was later released on $20,000 bond. A hearing is set July 20 in General Sessions Court.
