A Murfreesboro man was struck in the front yard of his Lakeshore Drive home Thursday morning as a car skidded out of control on the residential street off Bradyville Pike.
“The vehicle left the roadway, traveled through two yards, struck a pedestrian at 1626 Lakeshore Drive and struck a house at 1630 Lakeshore Drive,” Murfreesboro Police Department spokesman Kyle Evans said.
Lawernce “Larry” Davis, 69, of 1626 Lakeshore Drive was struck by a Honda Accord station wagon driven by Jimmy Goodwin, 44, of Diana Street at 10:15 Thursday morning.
Goodwin’s car then struck a brick home leaving a gaping hole in the garage.
Davis received severe injuries and was Lifeflighted to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville where he was listed in critical condition.
“We do believe the injuries were life threatening,” Evans said.
Goodwin was taken to Middle Tennessee Medical Center.
The driver told police he remembered being on the street, then waking up in the hospital, the spokesman said.
No other injuries were sustained. The family's dog ran away and has not been located.
The crash scene is currently under investigation by MPD’s Fatal Accident Crash Team and the cause of the crash is unknown at this time, Evans said.
"We do believe preliminarily speed is a factor," Evans said.
Officers have been running radar in the neighborhood because of prior speeding complaints, the spokesman said.
“To go through two yards and strike the corner of a brick house, the vehicle was traveling at a considerable speed, but we will be looking at other factors,” he said.
Neighbor Amanda Housser said cars speed down the road constantly. She just spoke with her neighbor Jack McCaslin Tuesday about the need for cars to slow down on the tree-lined, seemingly sleepy road.
“And now this happens,” she said.
“People fly down here all the time. They fly up and down here all the time,” McCaslin said., adding he has seen the Honda Accord speeding on the street before.
Housser, a night in-home nurse, was sleeping when the accident occurred, but said the sound of the crash woke her.
“I see him (Davis) out there gardening all the time,” she said.
As McCaslin dialed 911 his wife and former paramedic, Debra, performed first aid on Davis until First Responders arrived, he said.
