Man drowns in Stones River

WGNS reported emergency crews were dispatched At 2:50 Tuesday afternoon to the West Fork Recreation Area in response to a possible drowning.

The boat started taking on water about a mile downstream from the West Fork boat ramp. The teens were able to swim to the opposite bank. A passing boater took them to the other side and summoned help.

A passing boat rescued two juveniles on board.

The juveniles told deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriffs Office that their uncle was attempting to swim to shore, but went under.

Approximately five hours after a boat capsized, divers recovered the body of a 39-year-old male from the Stones River.

Shortly before 7 p.m. a sonar search of the area located the body just before dark. It was caught in a stump about 50 feet from the shoreline.

The nephews indicated that no one was wearing a life jacket. Divers from the sheriff’s Special Operations Response Team searched the cold water until the body was recovered.

The West Fork Recreation Area is a part of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and is on the Stones River between state route 840 and Smyrna.

The name of the drowning victim has not been released.
