Making it easier to drink legally in the park

Murfreesboro City Council held a short meeting Thursday night and passed all items unanimously, including possible changes making it easier to drink alcohol on public property.

The proposed ordinance would change city law to allow alcohol to be served and consumed on “various (city-owned) properties used by the public for public gatherings and special events, including weddings, fundraisers, receptions, and the like,” the ordinance said, adding alcohol may be served at these types of events.

Current law says any and all possession and use of alcohol is illegal on city property with exceptions to property managed by other institutions, like the Center for the Arts and Old Fort Golf Course.

Even with the proposed changes, it will still be illegal to drink on a public street or sidewalk in the city.

All public hearings, rezonings and annexations unanimously passed without any discussion or fanfare.

This headline is slanted.

This is not the way our parks should be used. If someone gets drunk at one of the events and gets hurt for some reason, will they sue the city or the county? I believe they will. The city should think about the liability to the taxpaying citizens. What are they thinking. Guess some of the big wigs in town want this change so they can now get passed the law when they become drunk on city property.

Devolver and Diddlede, I have disagreed with a few of your comments, however, I would have to say is you two hit this one on the nose. The next issue will be what beer or whine will be served?

I don't see the problem. A sign could be put up saying "Drink at your own risk".

Sounds like these "city-owned properties" are being set up as a point of origin for more drunk drivers to get on our streets and kill more inocent victims. We know that not all of them are going to bother to have designated drivers.

bunny, a sign. come on, not in murfreesboro - it might be too big on too close to the right of way.

In Beloit Wisconsin you have to get a $25.00 alcohol permit for the parks. This doesn't include park rental, which is returnable if no problems.

After a good time at a city function, head on down to Memorial and Northfield for a photo shoot.

Sounds like a progressive move to me. Communities all over the country have wine and beer sales at public gatherings. It's a service to the attendees that want it and a good source of revenue for whoever is sponsoring the event. I'm thinking along the lines of events like the Jazzfest on the square. I've been to hundreds of public gatherings such as art shows and concerts on municipal property where alcohol was served and have never seen anyone obviously intoxicated. Now the Titans games, that's another story.

They'll sell booze at public functions but when it comes to letting the general public buy wine at their local grocery store they flatly say NO WAY! It's a double standard.

By: elguapo on 10/6/08
Purchasing wine in grocery stores, as you can do in most states, is regulated on a state level, not locally. Hopefully, we will be able to do both in the future. Relaxing our archaic laws in regard to beer and wine sale and use in public areas will be a move in the right direction.
Rest assured, the irresponsible individuals that commit crimes such as driving under the influence are not the type of folks that will buy a glass of wine at a public gatherng or a bottle of wine at Publix to enjoy with their meal.

Let’s make sure we get some of the bad guys real drunk and then go start a fight with some people minding there own business. Might keep the gays away from old fort if there are a bunch of intoxicated gay bashers.

I too agree with your comments elguapo.

Singhey616, some of your comments have been somewhat abrasive, especially this one.

Whether you're trying to be funny or not, you need to ease down.
